CSV discussion of video arts piece 9

ACTIVISM
9. Jonathan Culp, Ghost Squat, 5:10, 2005
Toronto has a new mayor, but the reality of homelessness remains the same, as OCAP attempts to squat 590 Jarvis in November 2004. "Ghost Squat" attempts to re-vision the protest documentary, with the usual elements - speeches, marching, confrontation - reorganized visually, aurally and chronologically. With a haunting soundtrack from Toronto chamber-rock band

I thought this piece was interesting in that it created a kind of point of view. It felt a lot like memory: missing some portions, with others emphasized. There was a strong sense of "being there", and a clear statement of how it felt created by the music track.

Nice use of sound layering helps a lot in a piece like this.
